Study Identifies Predictors Of Bipolar Disorder Risk
Article Date: 23 May 2006 - 0:00am (PDT)

A new study presented today at the 159th Annual Scientific Meeting of
the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in Toronto, Canada
identified five predictors for bipolar disorder risk in patients who
have been unsuccessfully treated with antidepressants. Researchers
concluded that significant risk factors of bipolar disorder among
patients already diagnosed with major depression were anxiety, feelings
of people being unfriendly, family history of bipolar disorder, a
recent diagnosis of depression, and legal problems.

It would be great, if group members did the same, when they came across

You're quite welcome, Markey, and I agree with you that education is
very helpful in waging the constant battle that is this disease.
Either that or it's a reverse correlation--manic-depressives like to be
educated.

I have learned a lot--psychopharmacological facts and theories, how
others deal with their illnesses, how others perceive their illnesses,
insidious ways the illness can manifest itself.

But for me the real benefit to being "part" of this ng community--quite
an intelligent, self-aware, and forthright one, for the most part--is
in knowing that other people face the same problems I do. When I was
growing up, no one had a clue about this, of course, and my parents
used to scold me and get angry at me for what are, now, obvious
manifestations of my nascent manic-depressive illness.

Unfortunately most of these risk factors aren't things people can avoid. The
only one maybe is legal problems, and that could easily be a symptom rather
than a cause.

I don't like the word professionals use-stigma-or astigmata,it
hurts-that goes with the illness.Intolerance of ambiguity-besides
rejection-at best even good people are unsure how to respond-&
yes, education is important & so is an open heart-it isn't easy being
normal,I bet.One's behaviour -pro social-like around here-most of the

are millions of unreported acts of kindness & forgiveness,I'm told.Harry
