I took myself off of Risperdal & Lamictal without telling my pdoc. Am I in
for a lot of mental problems from going off of the meds myself?

First you'll go through withdrawl from you drugs 24 hrs to 2 weeks. I
did a doctor ordered withdrawl after a prescription drug interaction,
and it was hell. Then I went manic. then I had to shake my hands and
feet and hop up and down and couldn't sleep. This is how I present as
manic. Then no one would listen to me because I was obviously not
myself. HA! No drugs. Then was accused of faking it.

Stay with the drugs and stay with you therapist and pdoc. You don't
know what will happen, but life of a pber is always better on
prescription drugs and not self medicating with booze and illegal
drugs.

I think is asking for trouble. Geting off meds is dangerous, you could
get very depressed or manic. It's better to speak to your doc and find
some alternatives.

Please get back on the meds. My boyfriend went off of the Depakote and
Risperdal in the spring. Now it is summer time and he is running around
silly making a fool of himself.

Deborah:

My reaction is not so much "don't do it" though I would certainly
advise - 1 AT A TIME, and SLOWLY.

But rather...why? And why on your own? Do you have issues with your
doctor? Perhaps you can't trust him/her? In which case seeking a pdoc
you can feel good about is priority one. And were those meds ones that
you were sure were causing you distress? What were the symptoms? If
those are your only meds, that's one picture. If you were on more meds,
it's another. It's very hard to tell from such limited information
whether what you did was a very reasoned decision or spur of the
moment.

Good luck, though - and try to put together a relationship with a
doctor that you feel is a trusting one. Though you are ultimately your
own person and in charge, a good doc relationship will make a lot of
difference, and I agree with the other posters in that there could be
devastating effects to come, you have no way to be certain; and a good
relationship with a doc could help if that started up.

take care
