Please help. After many (30+) years of being treated for depression,
panic disorder, and was about to ask new psych. for attention def. dis.
meds I saw on T.V., I was told "I think you have been misdiagnosed and
that is why the anti-dep. meds just made you feel worse. I believe you
are bipolar" Well, he started me on Lamictal and said to stop Doxapin.
My brain slowed down, but at 100mgs to 175 mgs. the headaches,
eyeaches, and irritability made me stop taking it. He said try 25mgs.
in 2 weeks, but side effects returned. If I take half of a 25mg.
Serroquel I sleep all day. (Otherwise, I'm up all nite) Did anyone else
have problems with Lam. and something that did help them? I hate to go
thru "try everything" again! Thanks, Sooz

I can tell you this. You are describing exactly what the shrink said to
me. I stopped the anti-dep drugs took the lamictal and presto I had a
life changing experience. the lamictal took about 3-4 weeks to work but
it has. i am on 800 mil a day with no problems except memory problems.
Sorry if the lamictal is not working but the diagnosis to go off of
the anti-dep meds and onto a mood stabilizer worked like a charm. don't
give up.

Hello, I am the ex-fiance of someone who has started Lamictal. She has
been treated for Depression and PTSD for years. She was on many meds,
but with moving to another state, had to switch doctors who decided to
place her on Lamictal. We were living together for a year and things
were fine. As soon as the doc started her on Lamictal, she changed. Her
personality changed, her feelings for me and other friends changed. It
has been sad for me. She seems to be feeling better and all I want is
for her to be well. I was just wondering if anyone else has had an
experience like this? I could really use some advise on how to deal
with it. I myself have never been treated for depression, but after
this breakup, Im having a very hard time. Im assuming she has been
diagnosed as a bipolar or they wouldn't be treating her with lamictal??
Any suggestions? words of advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you ahead of time!

I've been on your girlfriends side of the equation.

Somtimes getting well, as in finding the correct med combo, and making
a fresh start in a new location where no one knew you when you were
actively ill can be a life changing experience.

When we feel better and our true self is no longer clouded with the
symptoms of the illness we go through a process of evaluating old
patterns, experiences, friendships, jobs, the whole schmere and letting
them go...especially when we associate them with when we were ill.

And, when we are more stable we have so many more options than we did
when we were ill......horizons open up and put things into perspective
for us.

Sad for those left behind but it is part of the recovery process.

Note......even with the right med combo we are still BP, and will have
to deal with the disorder for the rest of our lives. But the
difference between being correctly medicated and using the coping life
skills we develop and the debilitating situtions we've lived with when
feeloing unwell is a vry, very dramatic difference. No one would want
to go back to active, raging BP after finding the right med combo with
the fewest negative side effets...at least in my own experience.

Thanks for responding Maggie, In the end, all I want is for her to be
well. I really feel for all those afflicted with this illness, and for
those like me who love ones dealing with it. Myself I feel cheated,
alone and lost. It's hard when you are there for all the hard times and
when things seem to be getting better, you are lost in the wake. But as
you said, and from what I have read, this is all part of the illness. I
wish the best for her, tho its hard letting her go, and I am going to
get counseling for this myself. It's hard to understand how something
that was so perfect between us suddenly dissapears within a few weeks.
She told me she had been struggling with depression, but never BP. Her
family didn't tell me either. They just told me how happy I make her
and how much they liked me, and I liked them! I wish they would have
told me more about this. If I knew, I may have dealt better with what
was happening, or not. I keep asking myself what I could have done, or
If I could have done anything at all. In time I'll be fine, but I worry
about her. and this is not healthy for me.

Once again, thank you for your words! And I hope that things go well
for you!
