My doctor gave me some pills that were ER. How do they differ from
regular tablets?

Are they better for you?

I have seen XL too. What is that?

ER = extended release. XL = even more extended release. In other
words, the pills dispense the medication gradually, so you need to
take them less often. Other than that, they are equivalent to standard
immediate-release pills.
