I have been doing well and then it seems like I get slammed in the
face.

I think what triggered it was finding out, my union failed to do their
job. They didn't represent me correctly and I was basically told lie
upon lie from the union steward, up to last year.

Does anyone have any idea of what I could do about the union?

Also, how do you handle these type of stressful situations?

I felt I was doing so good and this happens.

You have several options:

1) fire your rep and ask that a paid staff member represent you and that they
consult with a union attorney. (best option in my opinion)

2) hire a labor law attorney--a good one with a name and reputation. (costly,
but if they take your case, you know you are going to win something.

3) talk to labor relations or personnel. (not a good idea IMO, because you will
be fraternizing with the enemy)

4) you may have a state agency that you can also file a complaint
with--depending on the issues involved and your State's infrastructure.

5) cut your losses and bail. (depends on your situation and how much stress you
are under)

I've been involved in my union since 1984. I've served so many positions, I
can't remember them all. ;)

Feel free to email me. :)

Mark...
I am on the management side of things...so have a bit of a different
perspective than Nancy...and agree with everything she says....

Two further thoughts...

First, be careful of who you talk to in the local...usually the
stewards are drinking buddies of the officers (at least they were in
the UAW and Machinist locals I had to deal with...)

Second...the National Labor Relations Board is empowered to deal with
both management/union relations issues AND intra-union issues...Check
with your local NLRB office about what they can do to help...

Bill also has some great advice. His last suggestion was vaguely referenced in
my post, because each state operates differently. In California you should go
first to the <darn, can't remember the name>. In the past, you would go to the
State Personnel Board, then to State Labor Relations and then you can appeal to
the NRLB. But, they've killed the State Personnel Board, so there is no
oversight by the State anymore.

Which is why I was vague. ;)

In our union, we used to have problems with staff and reps cohort. But, ever
since a couple of really bad drinking incidents, it's much more business. Even
the alcoholics do not get falling down drunk anymore. :)

I was mostly represented in my work time. But, I spent several years on the
management side. I trained to be a manager. But, they screwed me, made me so
sick I can't ever work again. I never made it to the next level--I got screwed.

On to more positive things...........................

Best of Luck,
Nancy
